Fall is in full force. The leaves are changing, and the temperature is dropping a little more each day.


As the weather gets colder you’ve probably noticed that your hair is starting to get dryer as well. Part of this is because once the furnaces kick on there is less moisture in the air for your hair to absorb.


We’ve compiled some winter hair tips and tricks to help those locks stay happy all season long. 1. Ramp up your moisture game

  • If you normally use a spray leave-in conditioner, try using a creamy rub-in instead. The heavier consistency will retain moisture longer against the drying effects of the air.
  • Leave your conditioner on longer after you shampoo. Let it soak in for 5-10 minutes before you rinse
  • Try a moisturizing night repair conditioner such as Kerastase 8H Magic Night Serum (available online and carried in all Ottalaus Salon locations) This super great leave-in can be applied to dry hair—taking care to focus on dry split ends, and then all night your hair soaks up the moisture, so you wake up to ultra-soft shiny locks (no need to rinse out!)

2. Switch out your volumizing products for moisturizing ones

  • One of the things about volumizing products is that they are known to have less moisture. Moisture = weight, right? In the winter it might be a good idea to forgo, or at the very least alternate, your volumizing products with moisturizing ones and give your dry locks a little boost. This also helps prevent breakage. Dry hair is less elastic and breaks easier.

3. Conquer flyaways (static)—Believe it or not, those static-y locks are generally caused by a lack of moisture—hence the reason it happens more in the winter! Try these tips to set it straight!

  • That creamy leave-in mentioned above? Put a dab in the palm of your hand, rub your palms together to distribute, then glide your hands over dry hair
  • In a pinch and out in public? A little bit of lotion (we all keep this in our purse right, lol) can be used in place of conditioner. Be careful with overusing as some lotions have a very high alcohol content and dyes that can effect the health and well-being of color treated hair
