Hair Extensions FAQ: Your Top Questions Answered
Kristin Chenoweth famously stated, "My doctor said, 'What are these metal things?' And I said, 'They're hair extensions.' And he said, 'They saved your life.'
Hair extensions are one of the most popular looks/services, thanks to their completely customizable nature to achieve a jaw-dropping style. From Jennifer Lopez to Kim Kardashian, we have seen time and time again just how flawless extensions can be. Oftentimes being undetectable. But let's be real, with the ability to take a blunt bob to a luxurious waist-length hair, it's truly no wonder it's one of our most popular services.
However, there are a lot of nuances to this service, and we believe an interested guest should know all the facts before investing in extensions. Let's dive into your most FAQ and get answers from our very own talented experts.
What kind of extensions do you offer?
Tape In, K Tips, Racoon, Handtied Wefts, and Beaded Wefts.
We offer free extension consultations, during which you can meet with a stylist to determine which method to use to achieve your goal.
How long do hair extensions last?
Longevity between moveups/reinstillations varies depending on the method used.
Tape Ins- 6 to 8 weeks
K Tips- 3 to 5 months
Hand Tied- 6 to 8 weeks
Racoon- 3 to 4 months
How you care for your hair also impacts how often you visit the salon. So make sure you are taking good care of your extensions!
How are hair extensions attached?
Beaded Sewn Wefts- a row of hair is sectioned into one-inch sections and is secured by a bead. After a row of beads is attached, the wefts of hair are sewn in with a needle and thread.
Sewn In Wefts: Another method of wefts is placing a braid right against the scalp to act as an anchor. After the braid is formed, the weft is placed and sewn into the braid.
Tape-Ins- A small section of hair is sandwiched between two pieces of tape that are at the top of the extensions. The tape is safe adhesive to secure the hair to your natural hair.
K Tips- A protective shield or disk is often placed against the scalp to protect it from heat, from there a specialized heat connector tool clamps down on to the bond and fuses it to the hair strand. The stylist then will roll the bond to create a protective shell over the strand.
Do extensions damage your hair?
Extensions should not be damaging. With proper installation and care, your hair should remain healthy.
Of course, there is the natural shedding of hair due to the end of a hair cycle. So if you see some hair loss, especially with bead removal, there is no reason to be alarmed!
It is key to brush your hair often through the day and sleep
What hair care products do you recommend for extensions?
We ALWAYS recommend having a good hair oil, heat protectant, and shampoo + conditioner combo. Those are the very first products each person should invest in. After that, the haircare routine is completely customizable to you and your natural texture!
For example, if someone had more natural texture to their hair, our stylist would recommend a smoothing styling cream to help create a seamless flow of natural to extension hair.
Being mindful of what ingrdeints are in your haircare is key to keeping extensions heralthy. Avoid any harsh chemicals such as sulfates and parabens. During the summer it is so important to check if your sunscreen is mineral based and Avobenzone + Octocrylene free. Avobenzone will cause breakage and discoloration of your extensions.
Can you curl or straighten hair extensions?
You can curl, crimp, straighten, and blow-dry your extensions! It is always recommended to blow-dry your extensions after washing to maintain the best hair health.
However, please ensure they are made from human hair. Synthetic hair is made up of plastic, and when plastic meets heat, it'll melt.
